Superman

Superman
By Julie Flanders

You lift the corner
Of the day
And see a tragic toy
On the curb

A mile away
A young boy
Is holding someone’s hand
And looking back
On eternity

You never know
Where you’re going
To land
Or what you will see

When you are lost

The world inside you
Screams
A certain pitch
Why aren’t you younger
Why aren’t you rich
So far, so good
You used to think

It’s too late to sleep
Too early to drink
Just like some toy in a ditch
You can’t go home
To the old place

You walk to the curb
And pick up the toy
Turn it over
And wipe its face

Everything needs a place
To go

You do it for a boy
You will never know
